I think I must be feeling 2 today because I have the Whys?

So a few days ago was our 2-year anniversary here at Lice Girls and I tried to put myself in the place of being two to see what that could mean to our busineindexss… or at least that is what I thought I was doing, and by doing that I just had lots of questions.  Big questions for the business but ones that I think are sort of healthy for a 2 year old business, ones that make us check why & how we are doing what we do.   But then I had the other whys!  The whys that get a little carried away, whys that could actually waste my time.

WHY do people continue to use toxic, non-effective head lice treatment products?

WHY are they calling super lice “mutant ninja” lice?

WHY does killing and annihilating a tiny wee bug cause me, the “Peace” major, such satisfaction?

WHY is the lice STIGMA still so prevalent today when we know lice don’t discriminate?

WHY does even mentioning the dreaded “lice” make some people itch and flinch with fear….  some even get downright psychotic  in the belief that they are THERE even when they are NOT!!

These are just a few of those “why”question that started to flood my mind as I was treating my last client.  Then with all these why’s you start to come up with a list of answers that often include some pretty wild conspiracy theories.  Does this ever happen to you?  I surely hope so, as one doesn’t like to be alone in there craziness.

imagesWell maybe it isn’t crazy to to think that those green mutant ninja turtles are tired of living in sewers so they are mating with super powered head lice to shrink and find new homes on the top of heads… I mean that way they do get a whole new view of the world right.

Head Lice love school trips!

It’s that time of year again when kids are going overnight to Outdoor Education with their classes and they are SO excited, but what they don’t know is that lice also love it! We see a surge of head lice infestations after overnight school trips and extended field trips. The kids are often in closer proximity once they are outside the confines of the classrooms and that means more opportunities to spread head lice. If you don’t want an unexpected visitor in your house this spring, be sure to send your child with prevention spray and bring them in for a head check when they return.  It can be the difference between a quick treatment for a new infestation or multiple treatments for your entire household if the lice settles in for the long haul. Remember lice don’t jump or fly, but they can transfer with head to head contact or if you are in contact with a surface where a bug has been knocked off the head. We often see children itching their heads or finger combing their hair and a bug is knocked off. That means all those girls who put their heads together for pictures, lay down to read books together at night, or simply borrow a brush or headband can transfer head lice quickly. Tell those bugs who’s boss and prevent head lice with out Mint Spray today!

Teachers are Awesome!

ABM_1399346115I want to give a HUGE shout out to teachers and school staff. They spend more hours a day than I do with my kids and do a much better job of exercising patience, wisdom, and discipline…maybe I should go back to school to be a teacher to learn how to become a parent! No seriously though, have you thanked your child’s teacher lately?  Have you told them how grateful you are that they spend 10+ months a year thinking about how your child will learn best and how to make sure they keep up with every growing pressures to adhere to testing measures. So much is expected of these amazing teachers and they receive mediocre monetary compensation and little praise.  What teacher had an impact on your life and changed your path?  I vividly remember my language arts teacher, Mr. Goodall, changed my perception of my intelligence. In one single comment about my writing, he inspired me to try harder, to be better. I can remember many moments like this in my educational career, from the school secretary to the school counselor, yet I don’t know how to get in touch with them to thank them. Thank them for being kind and encouraging to a small person who needed those words more than they knew. SO I say we start a movement of thanking our teachers, old and new, for the profound impact they have…go ahead…make a list of the teachers you are going to thank right now!

Lice Girls offers free head checks to all school personnel, always!  It’s the least we can do 🙂

1st Grader Finds Head Lice

Paige combing out her brother, she is smart and wore a cap!

Paige combing out her brother, she is smart and wore a cap!

How did this happen?  Don’t they hear me preaching about prevention ALL THE TIME????? Yes, that’s right folks, my kids have head lice and I am not pleased.

The story goes like this…the kids have a day off school (who gives a Tuesday off school anyway?), but I still have to fight lice, so they come to work with me.  My youngest firmly believes she is already an adult and keeps asking to help me, to which I tell her I am working and she needs to find something else to do.  I am finally done treating a very sweet family and Paige becomes adamant that she uses my equipment to do a head check.  Her sweet brother agrees to be her guinea pig while I clean before the next treatment.  I can’t believe what I hear come out of my daughters mouth next…”Mom, I found a bug!”.  WTF????

I always joke about the irony if one of my kids got lice…I literally talk about head lice prevention every single day…at work, the grocery store, to friends, and of course my own kids. I guess I know how well my kids listen…not at all. We traced the source to an overnight school trip where all the kids shared helmets on a ropes course and what could my teenager do… she “had to share the helmet or she would be the only one not participating”. So I am guilty of not practicing what I preach because she infected her brother also.  Thankfully the treatments take only an hour and they are officially head lice free quickly, which is a stark comparison to the weeks of combing after our last infestation a few years ago. I can officially say I personally love this business 🙂

Back to weakly head checks for my family. I admit I got lazy and stopped checking them every Sunday evening, but if I had, I would have caught this infestation quickly and avoided multiple treatments and the shame of now telling everyone that the Lice Girl’s kids have head lice…YUCK!

Trish Bittman Guest Post – Even hot bloggers get head lice!

582335_10151361560968341_337545763_nThis past school year has been absolutely lousy (you see what I did there?)!

Each one of my three daughters had lice. Each one of their schools sent an email to all the parents notifying us that a student had been found to have head lice at least five times this year. It went through their classrooms, softball teams and Girl Scout troops. (I swear girls hug each other and get head-to-head way too much).

How will I survive summer and head lice?

lord of fliesOk, I know I should be excited about summer approaching so quickly, hot weather and summer vacations, but the reality is…I’m terrified! I received a very upbeat email from my kids’ school  saying “only 12 days left of school!”…WTF…that can’t be…that must be a typo of epic proportions…I…can’t…breathe.

Giant SUV = Terrible Person?

images

Is my SUV too big?

Ok, I am coming clean…well not exactly because I am actually killing the world slowly with my new monstrous SUV…it was only a year ago that I judged those people with huge monstrosities they called cars, that don’t fit in parking spaces, take up too much room on the already crowded ferry, and honestly just look ridiculous.
